You have a special affinity for Polaroids. Can you talk about that?
For about 3 years after college, I strictly shot on my Polaroid camera - I loved it for the challenge of getting the sickest shot in one take, no redos. It was such a great way for me to hone my craft and be confident in my decision to pull the trigger, so to speak. I wanted every image to be a whole image within itself, telling a great story in one frame, one moment.
How would you describe your overall aesthetic?
Ha. I don’t think I would describe it. That might sound strange, but I don’t really feel I can or want to describe it. I think if I had to answer the question it would be - how does it make a person feel to see my work? Does it open their hearts or make them remember a time long ago or far off in the near distance? Does it make them remember a time they have yet to live, but it feels familiar? Does looking at a portrait of a person I’ve taken [or a portrait of themselves] remind them of themself - like in the true sense?
