Speaking of your boys, do you feel like having children changed your outlook on how you approach your work? Have you thought of any projects specifically by drawing inspiration from being with them?
I think my boys have opened up my heart in ways I hadn’t anticipated. I feel more. I am more empathetic and more sensitive. I can’t help but see my sons’ faces in every child’s face. And I’ve realized I can’t consume content the way I used to - seeing a child hurting or suffering due to a senseless war or conflict, derails me. Watching my boys create has also taught me so much. Zavien is only 2.5 so with him we’re still working on not running with sharp pencils, but Phoenix is so unselfconscious when he is drawing and his art feels so honest and unfiltered. I know I’m his mama, but he’s my favorite artist right now. I can’t get enough of the stuff he makes and I’m obsessed with his distinct style and approach.
I also think having my boys has made me more selective with how I spend my time. I’m a full-time working mama and I’m aware of making a choice to spend a huge chunk of my waking hours away from my kids, so that time better be well-spent and productive.
